ACE RACE Tournament Slated for June 23

The Staunton Disc Golf Club will host an ACE RACE tournament at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23. The tournament is free to SDGC members and $5 non-members. The tournament is open to the public. For this 18 hole tournament, participants will tee off from shortened tee boxes, providing the possibility for a hole in one on each hole. The first ten participants to score holes in one will receive a free DX plastic disc. A complimentary cookout will follow the tournament. For information, contact Will Carson Grant at 540-448-2410.

Ridgeview Baptist Church Takes First Week of Church League

9 The 2012 SDGC Spring Church League teed off under wet conditions on May 24. The foursome from Ridgeview Baptist Church won the first match. Louie Miller of Victory Worship Center won individual medal honors with a two over par 56. Will Carson Grant of Advent Christian Church was second at 57 and Josh Poole of Ridgeview finished third at 58. In the church league, the #1 seeds from each team play each other, the #2 seeds by each other, etc. The Ridgeview team, led by Captain Larry Mancini, includes: Mancini, Poole, Tyler McClure, Chris Beck, Tony Beard and Andy Delikat. The teams and their scores were:

No Handicapped TAG League this Sunday

The SDGC TAG League will meet as usual this Saturday, May 26, at 1 p.m. The red tees to orange baskets layout will be played.

Due to the Memorial Day Weekend, the Sunday Handicapped TAG League will not meet on May 27.

Reed Goes from First to Worst

Joey Reed stepped up to the first tee with the SDGC number one club tag. He left with the highest club tag – #31. Rene Devito shot a an adjusted score of two under par 52 to win the handicapped TAG league. Will Carson Grant shot even par to finish second. Participants, scores and tags earned were as follows: Rene Devito, 52,( 1); Will Carson Grant, 54 (5); Mitch Dickens, 56 (12); Roy Carter, 57, (18); Kristin Reed, 58 (21); Joey Reed, 59 (31).

One for the Ages

Although many of the regular SDGC members were elsewhere, 21 discers took advantage of the perfect weather to compete in the 2012 Random Draw Doubles Tournament. It turned out to be one for the ages. The blue tees to orange baskets layout, suplimented by heavy spring growth, proved a massive challenge. One grouping took three hours and forty minutes to complete the usual one two hour layout and one team shot an 86 for the round.

Mitch Dickens of High Point, North Carolina, teamed with Stan Juchno of Staunton to shoot an astounding 13 under par 101 to win the tournament. Kyle Wilson of Steeles Tavern and Ross DeFlores of Weyers Cave shot a solid 107 to finish second. Mike Wilson and Sam Vincent and Joey Reed and Blu Noel shot 111 to tie for third. The participants and their scores were: M. Dickens/S. Juchno, 101; K. Wilson/R. DeFlores, 107; M. Wilson/S. Vincent, 111; J. Reed/B. Noel, 111; D. Station/J.R. McKinney, 113; L. Miller/A. Koska, 118; R. Carter/K. Reed, 125; D. Grant/T. Ashworth, 126; W.C. Grant/M. Mitchell, 130; L. McKinney/S. Shawn, 160.

Doubles Tourney This Saturday

The Staunton Disc Golf Club will host its annual Random Draw Captain’s Choice Doubles Tournament this Saturday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tournament is free to all SDGC members ($25 paid) and $5 per person for everyone else. The tournament is open to the public.

The schedule is as follows: 11 a.m. first round – Blue Tees to Orange Baskets Complimentary Lunch 1:30 p.m. second round – Red Tees to Yellow Baskets

You do not need to bring a partner. Players will be paired via random drawing. In Captain’s choice, both players drive off the tee, then both players throw a second shot from the best fairway lie, then both players putt from the best lie, etc.

The two winners will each receive a new Innova Blizzard Champion plastic driver.

TAG League Falters Under Carter Administration

The SDGC TAG League was saddled with its lowest attendance of the year on one of the most beautiful days of the year. The FOX News talking heads are placing the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Roy Carter administration. Sean Hannity noted that Carter’s policies caused Louie Miller to leave the course midterm. Bear Martin shot a 56 to take the match and go home with the #7 tag. Roy Carter finished second at 60 to earn the #12 tag. J.R. McKinney shot 74 to retain the #27 tag, and Liz McKinney kept her #30 tag with a score of 84.

While the action served to rehabilitate the legacy of ”W” Carson Grant, Grant confirmed Carter would be awarded a second term – leading the handicapped TAG League May 13.
